A file of correspondence concerning negotiations for compensation from Bulgaria following the shooting down of an El Al aircraft in 1955. The civilian aircraft had strayed into Bulgarian airspace and was shot down, with the loss of fifty-eight lives. Subjects covered in the file include the decision of the British and American governments not to pursue the case in the International Court of Justice; the British negotiations on behalf of five claimants; and an assessment of compensation due. Further correspondence concerns South African and Israeli claims; and a request that the United Kingdom handle negotiations on behalf of South Africa. The file also covers correspondence from Lucy Hinks, whose son was the pilot on the flight; and the attempts of another claimant to negotiate separately with the Bulgarian government.
