Western and Southern (W): Albania (WA). Arbitration on Conflicting Claims to Albanian Gold Looted from Rome by the Germans During the War and Destined to be Applied to Settle Restitution Claims.

1953

A file containing documents relating to an Italian claim to recover gold looted by the Germans from the Bank of Albania in Rome in 1943. The file contains the first and second pleadings of the Italian government to the International Court of Justice, and a cover note explaining the background to the case, which notes that the looted gold had largely been deposited by the Italian government. The initial decision in the case had awarded a significant amount of the gold to the United Kingdom as reparations for the Corfu Channel Incident in 1946. The Italian case attempts to show why that decision should be overturned, as the looting had taken place before the incident in the Corfu Channel and therefore Italy had a prior claim.
