Poland: Strikes, Demonstrations and Attitude of the Polish People Towards Government: Incidents in Lodz and Baltic Port Cities (Gdansk, Gdynia, Elblag, Slupsk, Szczecin); Appointment of Edward Gierek as First Secretary, Polish United Workers' Party

1971

A file containing documents concerning the situation in Poland following the "ten-day crisis" of December 1970. Subjects covered in the file include an example of subversive literature produced during the crisis; renewed strikes at the shipyards in Gdańsk and Szczecin; the ending of these strikes following minor concessions by the government; a strike by mainly female textile workers of Łódź; and speeches made by leading politicians. Other subjects discussed in the file include the appointment of Stanisław Trepczyński as deputy foreign minister; the release of two political prisoners; the imprisonment of the leaders of the illegal "Ruch" right-wing group; and the lack of any organised opposition to the government within the universities. Documents in the file include extracts from speeches on the crisis by the Polish president, Edward Gierek, and the Polish prime minister, Piotr Jaroszewicz, at Gdańsk and Szczecin.
