Czechoslovakia: Internal Political Situation and Reactions Following the Soviet Invasion

1969

A file containing documents concerning politics in Czechoslovakia following the Soviet invasion of the country in 1968. The file includes a report on a speech given by the deputy prime minister of Czechoslovakia; a note reporting that Alexander Dubček was elected chairman of the Czechoslovak Federal Assembly; a dispatch from the British ambassador to Czechoslovakia about the replacement of Dubček as leader of the Czechoslovak communist party with the more conservative Gustáv Husák; and a declaration by the Czechoslovak Factory Trade Union announcing a strike in protest of the crackdown on liberalisation in Czechoslovakia since the Soviet invasion. Other topics discussed in the file include riots in Prague following the victory of the Czechoslovak ice-hockey team over the Soviet team; low morale within the Czechoslovak armed forces as a result of the Soviet invasion; changes in the leadership of the Czechoslovak government and press; and the new Czechoslovak federal constitution.
