Soviet Union: Soviet Press Comments on Policies of UK Government

1971

A file of correspondence and reports concerning Soviet press commentary on political events in the United Kingdom. The documents include highly critical Soviet press articles on the situation in Northern Ireland, covering the activities of British troops, the civil disobedience campaign, and the activities of the "fascist orange-men". Other Soviet articles covered attacks on the Conservative government; the extent of U.S. influence in Britain; Britain's entry into the European Economic Community; Britain's relations with Rhodesia, Singapore, and Malaysia; the collapse of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders; the bankruptcy of Rolls Royce; the Industrial Relations Act; rising unemployment and inflation in Britain; and strikes by British postal workers and Ford Motor Company employees. Other documents in the file include the discussions of British officials on how to counter the negative coverage; and reports of meetings held with Soviet officials to address the issue.
