Overview
------------
This compressed file contains files from the
Government Information Locator Service (GILS) database, December 7, 1994
through September 2, 2008.
History of GILS
---------------
The Government Information Locator Service
(GILS) was created in 1994 to provide a mechanism for users to identify,
locate, and describe publicly available Federal information resources,
including electronic information resources. GILS records identify public
information resources within the Federal Government, describe the information available
in these resources, and assist in obtaining the information.
In the years since GILS was issued, however,
advances in technology have made the standard obsolete that enable agencies to
avoid the ongoing, resource intensive cataloging efforts mandated by the GILS.
As a result of fr02se08N <
http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/FR-2008-09-02/pdf/E8-20138.pdf>
(also contained within this compressed file as E8-20138.pdf), the GILS application
previously on GPO Access is no longer being updated and an archive is
available. The archive database encompasses GILS records from December 7, 1994
through September 2, 2008.
Types of GILS Records
---------------------
Because this collection was decentralized, the
GPO Access GILS site was only one of several U.S. Federal GILS sites.
Thirty-two agencies mounted their GILS records on GPO Access. The GILS records
of the other departments and agencies are spread across many sites. For basic information
about GILS, visit <http://www.gils.net>.For agencies that mounted their
GILS records on a server other than GPO Access, GPO wrote GILS pointer records,
which describe their GILS holdings and link to those holdings. GPO sent those
pointer records to each agency and invited each to edit its own records as
appropriate.
GPO also created a series of GILS records
describing the information of Cabinet-level and major independent Federal
agencies, called Pathway Records.
Organization of GILS Records
----------------------------
The archive GILS records have been organized
into several folders (one for each record type or agency abbreviation), using
the naming convention within the parenthesis, (i.e. (fema)) as stated below:
All Records on GPO Access GILS Site (gils)
Pointer Records to other GILS sites (pointers)
Pathway Records Created by GPO (pathway)

The Government Printing Office partially funded

Permanent Public Access |
Title 44 of
the United States Code (44 U.S.C. Section 1911) stipulates that public access
to official Government information products disseminated through the Federal
Depository Library Program (FDLP) must be maintained permanently in regional
depository libraries and by depository libraries not served by a regional
library. Since online products are not physically distributed to depository
libraries for retention, GPO has assumed responsibility for the provision of
permanent access to Government information products residing on FDsys
servers. GPO's
permanent public access commitment is also met by bringing
agency-disseminated Internet resources under the purview of GPO and
incorporating them into a digital archive. GPO captures copies of agency
electronic information products, and creates PURLs so that users will be
automatically redirected to the archived products if the information is no
longer accessible on the agency Web site. Please refer to the report Managing
the FDLP Electronic Collection: A Policy and Planning Document for more
information. |
