Sub-collection Information | The Abraham Beck Collection is composed of the two journals and several letters written by Abraham Beck. As a young man Beck left his family home in upstate New York in 1818, to seek his fortune in the burgeoning city of St. Louis.The Journals describe his travels through New York, Pennsylvania and down the Ohio River. Along the way Beck describes the towns and people he met during his travels. The letters, written after his arrival in St. Louis, describe the city as well as give insight into the life of St. Louis just prior to and immediately following MissouriĀ“s admission to the Union. |
